WORK IN PROGRESS

SARAH

SARAH is a physical theatre piece created by Kurdish choreographer and Project/tag founder and artistic director Hussein Smko. Inspired by the stories of Hussein’s sister in the Kurdish region of Iraq, Sarah celebrates women’s resilience, shared humanity, and the Kurdish experience amidst wartime and Saddam Hussein’s 2005 trial.

Set in a courthouse under the Ishtar Gate of Babylon, Sarah tells the story of the pregnant, unwed Sarah on trial during a time of war. Sarah endures judgment from her patriarchal society and abandonment from her lover, but, like Ishtar, the Mesopotamian goddess of love, war, and fertility, she remains proud and resilient, never abandoning her pursuit of freedom.

"Supported by New York State Council of the Arts with the support of the Governor and the New York State Legislature."

SARAH celebrates women’s resilience amidst war.
