/ Hussein Smko

Hussein Smko is a Kurdish dancer and choreographer. He choreographed in festivals and residencies, including One Journey at the Kennedy Center, Battery Dance Festival, CUNY Dance Initiative, LPAC, Rough Draft, and the Chicago Cultural Center's Surviving the Long Wars. Notably, he danced with Pontus Lidberg’s On the Nature of Rabbit at the Joyce Theater (2024). Hussein acted and choreographed in plays like Iphigenia Point Blank and Outside. Collaborating with Or Schreibier in As It Ends It Begins, Hussein features in Dana Mills' book Dance and Activism. His work was critically acclaimed in The New York Times, Dance Magazine, Dance Enthusiast, Wall Street Journal, among others. A film documentary, The Performance, directed by Alfredo Chiarappa, offers an in-depth look into his artistic journey. In 2019, Hussein founded Project/Tag, a dance theater company. He choreographed Rose in the Sand and Call for Prayers. He is developing Sarah to premiere in 2025.
